The French National Gendarmerie Intervention Group (GIGN) has selected the Bren 2 chambered in 7.62x39mm.
The GIGN has purchased 68 Bren 2 rifles, manufactured by the company Česká Zbrojovka (CZ), in 2017. There is word of additional procurements in the near future, with the aim of replacing the majority of the Heckler & Koch (H&K) 416's that are currently in service.
The Paris terrorist attacks in 2015 was the event that prompted the decision for the GIGN to adopt the Bren 2. The terrorists used body armor that defeated the 9mm rounds from service pistols and pistol caliber carbines, and 5.56mm was also found to lack the necessary stopping power.
The Bren 2 selected by the GIGN is intended for close quarters combat applications and has a 9 inch barrel. The modifications requested by the GIGN include a flash hider designed for fitting a sound suppressor, and a modified gas regulation system that allows for sub sonic ammunition. The Bren 2 still retains it's precision at 400m with it's 9 inch barrel confirmed by the GIGN trials.
